How to Treat Anxiety and Fear In Dogs

Anxious Dogs - How to Help

Having a dog with anxiety comes with it's challenges. Here are some ways to help our anxious dog:
  1. Create a safe space: Provide your dog with a safe space where they can retreat to when they are feeling anxious. This can be a quiet room or a crate with a cozy bed and some of their favorite toys. No children or other pets allowed :)

  2. Avoid punishment: Punishing a fearful dog will only make their anxiety worse. Instead, try to remain calm and reassure them that they are safe.

  3. Gradual desensitization: Gradually expose your dog to the things that trigger their fear in a controlled and positive way. This can help them to overcome their anxiety and build confidence. Be sure your dog is learning and not overstressed - if they won't eat or sniff you may be too close to the fearful object or sound.

  4. Seek professional help: If your dog's fearfulness is severe or persistent, it may be helpful to seek the advice of a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. They can provide guidance, possibly medication and support in helping your dog overcome their anxiety. I offer virtual dog training all over the world!
